Looking at the Engineer Memes fan page it looks like we have all sorts of Engineers from all around the world! It's pretty cool how we all can relate to the same pictures and videos.
It's shocking to see how many types of fields there are in engineering. You can have a mechanical engineer, a civil engineer, an electrical engineer and environmental engineer (just to name a few). I even just received a message the other day where someone asked me if I knew what a packaging engineer was. I told them I didn't and then she told me she was studying it in the Philippines! I was shocked at first and then ended up googling it and found a page that described what it was. I thought it was pretty cool. It's great to see diversity on our facebook page though. It looks like the two popular engineering fields are electrical/electronics and mechanical engineering.

I made this picture for my fanpage and I thought it was hilarious. It might not be true at your school, but it is definitely true at the school I went too, University of British Columbia. I think in my graduating class (electrical & computer engineering) we had like approximately 20 girls out of 200. I was jealous of chemical and biological engineering though! They had such a better ratio compared to the other departments. However, I wouldn't want to go into chemical and biological engineering because I have no interest in chemistry and biology. I also met a lot of great friends in my department so I am happy with my choice!
So what kind of Engineer are you? Does the photo above reflect your engineering school or all the girls in civil/mechnical engineering at your school? Feel free to comment and discuss!
Or you can just leave a comment of what kind of engineer you are, where you studied, and where you are from, also how many girls were in your class!
Example
Electrical Engineering, University of British Columbia, Canada, 20/200

Civil engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, keeping and also organizing the whole process of constructing private and public establishments. These include pipelines, roads, highways, dams, bridges, tunnels, water treatment systems, airports and subdivisions. It is also the responsibility of civil engineers to oversee the activities and overall performance of the people involved in the projects. Although it may seem difficult to perform all the duties of a civil engineer, you will still find great reasons to become one.
ReplyDeleteMy classes of 90 are about 3/1 male to female. Not bad. But I found my queen at another school, also an engineer. I'm Mechanical at UIC, she is Materials Science at MSU. I win, because I stole from MSU! MU people, can I get a HAY-O!
ReplyDeleteCivil, Industrial and Agricultural Engineering @Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest, Romania
ReplyDeleteRatio of Boys:Girls = 5:1
When it comes to specialization, a civil engineering student can afford to choose among the areas which he wants to specialize on. As a matter of fact, most of these students based their choice or decision on their own characters and personal interest. These are your options you will have if you choose to proceed to a specialization course: construction, water resources, transportation, structural engineering, and geotechnical engineering. Your options actually don't end in these areas. After graduating from a civil engineering school, you may go on to be a researcher or a teacher perhaps. In short, this job may also involve administrative or office responsibilities.
ReplyDeleteElectrical Engineering, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Electrical Engineering. Currently 2 girls out of 50....
ReplyDeleteElectronic engineering, second year @ Politecnico di Milano, Italy; we're something like 150 people and only 5 or 6 are female. ReplyDeleteThat picture is pretty accurate of our classes (at Penn State). My own experience, I was the only girl in group projects, unless I was able to partner up with the other (or another girl) in the clas). Average was 4 girls in a lecture of 30 students (in our major classes). Smaller labs (15-20) had 2-3 girls in them.
As you can imagine, it is very unlikely that the construction of buildings and other important structures will end. In addition, all the existing facilities need to be maintained or restored, which these engineers are well trained to do. Given these facts, we can easily say that the need for professionals in the field of civil engineering will constantly be on the rise. As nations develop, and as companies continue to seek ways to modernize the production industry, there will surely be the need for civil engineers to oversee these operations. Check This Out
ReplyDeleteElectrical engineering right here! Well, hopefully, at least. We don't officially split off until next semester. I know of roughly 10 others banking on electrical, and 3 of us are girls. Ironically, we're also all notably older than average. (Former history & psychology student here...)
ReplyDeleteGot my Bachelor's in 2011 in Construction Engineering Technology from the University of Toledo. Of the 250 in the program, there were maybe 10 females - I really enjoyed joking around with the guys in classes! Now I live in Texas and work for a Fortune 500 company!
